Best Sandwiches
The quintessential All-inclusive Sandwich Ranking
This is a work in process! Watch the sandwich beauty unfold.
Sandwiches are the meal of meals. A sandwich is breakfast. A sandwich is lunch. A sandwich is dinner to the wise. I will be using a loose definition here, but so long as there is bread with food inside, I will count it. And yes flat breads count. Notably one can put two pieces of toast on top of each other and make a sandwich. Do not do this in front of the wrong people.
Best in sandwich:
Honourable/dishonourable mentions:
The best sandwich is always your goto, be that in your school lunch or breakfast or what you go to when you happen to have bread. This is all a matter of personal preference at the end of the day. Shout out to those Japanese strawberry cake sandwich things, they befuddle me, and I may have to give in and try one. Unshout out to tuna melts. I HATE tuna melts. Absolutely revolting and irredeemable.
1. Salmon Bagels
Perfection. My current filling cravings? Bagel toasted in the oven with brie, smoked salmon, gerkins, avocado, thinly sliced red onion, capers, sriracha, seasonal salad, salt and pepper. Recently I used a pretzel baguette to make this dish... simply delightful.
2. Bánh mì
Delicious and fresh. I dream of making this at home very soon, because vegetarian pâté isn't exactly a priority in restaurants. Fair enough.
3. Marmite
Now this is humble. No not with butter, or cheese, or chips. Plain marmite sandwiches were my bread and marmite, all the way through my primary and secondary education. The best formation, however controversial to my peers, is a marmite sandwich on soft seedy bread (such as Freya's) with walnuts inside. Great.
4. Cheese Toastie
Classic, easy, cheesy. Many means of construction, all good. I like to put sriracha in mine. Maybe that is for all my sandwich preferences..
5. Burgers
This is controversial to me, as most vege burgers suck and fish burgers make me queasy. But I hold such a strong fondness for the burger king chicken burger that the good ol' burger makes the list.
Best in wrap:
Honourable/dishonourable mentions:
Unfortunately dolmas don't count here as the grape leaf takes the part of the flatbread, but it would win the wrap catagory otherwise. Dishonour to whatever my mum was doing making zuchhini and tahini wraps with stale flatbread and no protein... I wasn't a fan.
1. Burrito
Who doesn't love a burrito? With fresh greens, chilli, guac, beans, salsa, a burrito is filling and beautiful. Rice and cheese at your own discretion. I am wary of the cultural authenticity of those that I make, but I hope to learn more and eat tastier soon.
2. Kebab
Nostalgic, reliable, yum, easy for vegetarians and always to taste. Never had a bad kebab.
3. Quesadilla
Good good good. Perfect for leftover chilli. Filling, spicy, cheesy, and just the right amount of effort. That is to say, minimal to tryhard, the quesadilla will always be good.
Best in toast:
Honourable/dishonourable mentions:
Here goes to honey and butter, much beloved by some, but this is my list dammit. And butter, well, butter not spread too much lardeda about it.
1. Avocado on toast
While it did cause the 2008 financcial crisis, avocado on toast took a hold of us for a reason. Its really good. So good, I put it on my precious salmon bagel every time. But to get the most out of your avocado, making guacamole is the best. Here's a recipe I liked the look of, but follow your heart.
2. Eggs on Toast
Sunny side is the most beautiful here, but one can rearrange the whole equation with boiled eggs and soldiers. Eggs and toast soulmates, and to join them in a throuple you must prepare the eggs as your heart instructs you, with a pinch of salt and pepper.
3. Soup and Toast
A perfect textural wedding. If you're into that. A hearty rye is perfect for this, though if you want to cross-pollenate a cheese toastie works well here too.
4. Nutbutters on Toast
Peanut is classic, though the pretentious almond, or dare I suggest ABC butter, are higher ranking in my books. Crunchy nutty salty.. you get the idea.
5. Jam on Toast
I am partial to plum, though truthfully I cannot say I liked jam on toast as a kid. I don't think you could've paid me as a kid to combine this and number four, though intellectually I understand the appeal.
